CRITERIA AIR CONTAMINANT EMISSIONS

Criteria Air Contaminants (CACs) include carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (coarse and fine), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOX).

The development of an emissions inventory is a labour-intensive procedure requiring a significant level of effort and commitment of time and resources. The end-uses for emission inventories may be summarized as follows:

Policy Planning and Development

Defining emission reduction objectives at the regional, national or global scale, and calculating emission abatement costs and benefits.

Regulatory Compliance

Demonstrating compliance with regional, national or international emission reduction objectives, policies or agreements.

Effects and Consequences

Assessing the potential and/or detectable impacts on human health, ecological systems, and real or perceived nuisance to the general public.

Atmospheric Modelling

Data input to transport, transformation, deposition, source apportionment and receptor modelling in support of policy planning & development. Verification of the benefits of abatement strategies and applied scientific research.

Quality Assurance and Quality Control

Comparisons between concentrations predicted from estimated emissions and observed ambient concentrations.
