Post Accident Evaluation is a useful tool in evaluating:

• what went wrong,
• why it went wrong, and
• what the long term health or environmental impacts may be.

Post accident analyses are also used to estimate what actual exposures and risks to specific receptors were as the result of an accident. This is useful for the purposes of evaluating compensation and liability and in aiding in the communication of risk to the public.

Post accident evaluation can be used to identify causes of accidents and evaluate the effectiveness of risk management plans in preventing the recurrence of specific accidents.
