SENES has a broad experience base in the area of ARD assessment including designing and performing field sampling and testing programs, interpretation of static and kinetic test results, and developing protocols for waste rock characterization (i.e., for separating acid generating from non-acid generating wastes). Numerous management strategies have been developed for tailings and waste rock disposal to minimize ARD production and environmental impact. Specific experience includes an evaluation of backfilling open pits, investigating elevated water table techniques for tailings, site-specific application of other waste management techniques such as flooding tailings, subaqueous disposal of waste rock, oxygen barriers for tailings and waste rock, and blending or amending sulphide wastes to reduce ARD.
